Who may work as a Pharmaberater in Germany?
§ 75(2) AMG names three groups: pharmacists and holders of a certificate of an examination passed after a completed university degree in pharmacy, chemistry, biology, human or veterinary medicine; pharmacist assistants and people trained as technical assistants in those fields; and Pharmareferenten. Under subsection 3 the competent authority may recognise an equivalent examination or training. Without one of these, a pharmaceutical company may not engage you to visit healthcare professionals and inform them about medicines.
Of all the named roles in German pharmaceutical law, this is the only one that works as a way in rather than a way up. The pharmacovigilance lead, the Qualified Person and the information officer arrive at the end of a career. The Pharmaberater sits at the beginning, and § 75 AMG is the door through which people move from nursing, laboratories, community pharmacy and science degrees into the pharmaceutical industry every year.
The provision is also persistently misunderstood. The most common mistake I heard in interviews: that the Pharmareferent examination is compulsory. For some candidates it is. For others it is simply not, and the difference costs both time and money.
What § 75 AMG regulates, and what it does not
Subsection 1 addresses the employer rather than you. Pharmaceutical companies may engage only appropriately qualified people to visit members of the healthcare professions on a full-time basis in order to inform them professionally about medicinal products. The law calls those people Pharmaberater. The rule also covers contact by telephone, which matters now that remote detailing and phone-based field teams are established.
Subsection 2 lists who holds the expertise. First, pharmacists and people with a certificate of an examination passed after completing a university degree in pharmacy, chemistry, biology, human or veterinary medicine. Second, pharmacist assistants and people with completed training as technical assistants in pharmacy, chemistry, biology, human or veterinary medicine. Third, Pharmareferenten.
Subsection 3 is the clause most people miss. The competent authority may recognise an examination passed or training completed as sufficient where it is at least equivalent to one of the listed qualifications. For foreign qualifications, and for degrees whose title does not literally read pharmacy, chemistry, biology or medicine, this is the decisive sentence. Biochemistry, biotechnology, nutritional science and molecular medicine routinely land in that assessment, and the outcome turns on the actual curriculum.
The point where many people spend money they do not need to
If you hold one of the degrees in subsection 2 no. 1, or one of the technical assistant qualifications in no. 2, you already satisfy § 75. A separate certified Pharmareferent examination is then not a legal requirement. It can still be worth doing, because it teaches commercial method that a biology degree does not, and because some employers like seeing it. It is not an obligation for that group.
If you come from a commercial background, from nursing without a matching assistant qualification, or from another industry entirely, the route runs through the certified Pharmareferent examination. That is a federally regulated continuing-education qualification, normally examined by a German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, with preparatory courses run by private providers, usually alongside a job. Check admission requirements and cost with your local chamber first, and do not let a training provider sell you an obligation your profile does not carry.
The day-to-day duties: § 76 AMG
The role carries two concrete obligations that come up in interviews more often than candidates expect. When giving professional information about an individual medicinal product, the Pharmaberater must present the Fachinformation, the German prescribing information under § 11a AMG. And reports from healthcare professionals about side effects, contraindications or other risks must be recorded in writing or electronically and passed to the principal.
That second duty wires the field force directly into drug safety. What you hear in a consulting room travels down this path into the company's pharmacovigilance system, which the Stufenplanbeauftragter under § 63a AMG is responsible for. Anyone instructed to hand out samples of finished medicinal products additionally keeps records of recipient, type, extent and date, and produces them to the authority on request.
What actually decides the selection
The § 75 expertise is an entry ticket, not a selection criterion. It gets you through HR's formal check. After that something else decides, and few people say it plainly to candidates.
Regional managers look for four things they can verify: access to physicians, meaning the ability to get a conversation started in an overbooked practice at all; comfort with targets and numbers, meaning territory thinking rather than visit counting; scientific footing, because a specialist knows the evidence and spots a weak argument instantly; and self-management, because nobody structures a home-office territory day for you. If you come from another sales environment, translate your numbers into that language. If you come from nursing or the lab, you have the science and need to evidence the commercial half, if necessary through a solid account of how you have persuaded people in difficult situations.
How to put that on a CV without sliding into cliché, and which terms German pharma applicant tracking systems filter on, is covered in the guide on the ATS in pharma. For open roles and employer types, see the overviews of pharma field sales jobs and sales entry routes for career switchers.
Where the role leads
Field sales is one of the few pharma positions from which several careers grow. The classic path runs through senior territories and specialty products to regional management and further into sales leadership. The second leads into key account management, once hospitals, purchasing groups and payers matter more than the individual practice. The third leads into head office, marketing or market access, where territory knowledge suddenly acquires strategic value. The fourth, which scientifically strong reps often underestimate, points toward medical affairs and MSL roles, though that route usually presumes a doctorate or a clinical degree.
That spread is the real value of the entry. Three years of territory ownership buy you a market understanding nobody in head office has, and you can cash it in more than one direction later.
A note on salary
No band here. Field sales pay depends on indication and product, on the share of variable compensation, on territory design and company class, and a base figure without the variable half does not describe reality. Two directions hold: specialty products and complex therapy areas pay on a different scale than primary care, and the move from territory into key account management shifts the structure more than any negotiation within the same role. How to negotiate an offer with a variable component is covered on the pharma salary negotiation page.
Frequently asked questions
Is the certified Pharmareferent exam mandatory?
Only for people who do not already meet § 75(2) through a recognised degree or technical assistant training. The certified Pharmareferent qualification is a federally regulated continuing-education examination usually taken before a German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, with preparatory courses offered by private providers. Biologists, chemists, pharmacists and medics generally do not need it to work as a Pharmaberater.
What duties does § 76 AMG impose?
When giving professional information on an individual medicinal product, the Pharmaberater must present the Fachinformation under § 11a. Reports from healthcare professionals about side effects, contraindications or other risks must be recorded in writing or electronically and passed to the principal. Anyone distributing samples of finished medicinal products on instruction must keep records of recipient, type, extent and date, and produce them to the authority on request.
Does my degree count if it is not literally called pharmacy, chemistry, biology or medicine?
Possibly. § 75(3) AMG allows the competent authority to recognise an examination or training that is at least equivalent to those listed. Degrees such as biochemistry, biotechnology or molecular medicine, and qualifications obtained abroad, are assessed through that clause and the answer depends on the curriculum. Clarify it before a round of applications rather than after.
Can you switch into German pharma field sales from another career?
Yes, and § 75 AMG is the framework for it. People coming from nursing, laboratory work, community pharmacy or a science degree often already meet the expertise requirement. Those who do not can acquire it through the certified Pharmareferent examination. The real hurdle in selection is rarely the statutory expertise; it is evidencing territory ownership, target achievement and credible clinical conversations with physicians.
