Pharma jobs in Ireland, a guide for candidates from abroad

Ireland has more pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity per head than anywhere else in Europe, works in English, and has a permit route designed to attract exactly the people who read a page like this. It also has a housing problem that decides more Irish job searches than any of that. All four are covered here.

The permit route, with the current figures

Citizens of the EU, EEA, Switzerland and the UK need no permit; the Common Travel Area covers UK nationals separately from EU rules. Everyone else usually comes through the Critical Skills Employment Permit, which is the route Ireland built to attract skills it is short of, and which carries the right to bring family and a path to long-term residence.

The salary thresholds published by the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment are a minimum annual remuneration of €40,904 for a restricted set of strategically important occupations requiring a relevant degree or higher, €36,848 where the applicant received the qualification within the twelve months before applying, and €68,911 for all other eligible occupations. Those figures and the eligible occupations list are at enterprise.gov.ie, and the government has published a roadmap of gradual increases, so check the current figure rather than this page before you rely on it.

The practical point is the occupations list. Whether you fall into the €40,904 band or the €68,911 band is decided by whether your job title sits on that restricted list, not by how good you are. Many pharmaceutical and life science roles do sit on it. Finding out which band your target role falls into is a ten-minute job that changes what you should be asking for.

Where the work is, and what kind of work it is

Irish pharma is weighted towards manufacturing and supply in a way the Swiss and Dutch markets are not. Cork and the surrounding harbour area hold a dense concentration of active pharmaceutical ingredient and biologics plants. Dublin and its west and south fringes carry a mix of manufacturing, commercial and shared-service functions. Limerick, Waterford, Sligo and Westport each anchor significant single-site operations, several of them among the largest of their kind in Europe.

What that means for a candidate is that the deepest demand is in quality, manufacturing science and technology, validation, supply chain and regulatory work attached to production, rather than in the clinical development functions that dominate hiring in Switzerland. If your experience is on the clinical side, Ireland is a thinner market than its headline pharma reputation suggests. If it is GMP-side, it is one of the strongest in the world.

The thing that decides more Irish moves than the job

Housing. Rental supply in Dublin and Cork is tight and expensive relative to salary, and this is the single most common reason a candidate accepts an Irish offer and then does not move, or moves and then leaves within two years.

Treat it as part of the negotiation rather than as a problem to solve afterwards. Ask what relocation support exists, whether the employer has arrangements with providers, and how long temporary accommodation is covered for. Employers in the Irish market are used to this question and the larger ones have real answers, but they usually do not volunteer them.

Notice periods and how Irish processes run

Statutory minimum notice under the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act runs on a sliding scale by length of service, starting at one week, and most professional contracts specify considerably more, commonly one to three months. It is the contract rather than the statute that will govern your case.

Irish processes tend to be faster and less formal than German ones and involve more people. Expect several conversational interviews rather than two structured ones, and expect the cultural fit assessment to be doing real work rather than being a formality. That is not a lower bar. It is a different one, and candidates arriving from a highly structured market often underprepare for it because it feels like a chat.

What an Irish CV looks like

The British convention. Two pages, no photograph, no date of birth, no marital status. Including any of those marks the CV as coming from continental Europe and, more importantly, raises a data protection question the recruiter would rather not have.

Irish and British recruiters expect achievement-led phrasing, which is the opposite of the plain factual register that works in Switzerland and Germany. A CV that reads well in Basel usually reads as flat in Cork, and the same CV in reverse reads as overclaiming. This is the single most common reason a candidate moving between the two markets stops getting responses and cannot see why.

Where the salary data lives

This page publishes no band, because a credible one would need a source and the useful sources are national. The Central Statistics Office publishes earnings data by sector and occupation at cso.ie. For pharmaceutical roles specifically, the annual salary surveys published by the larger Irish life science recruiters give a closer read, with the caveat that a recruiter's survey is drawn from that recruiter's own placements and is not a random sample.

Frequently asked questions

What salary do I need for a Critical Skills Employment Permit in Ireland?

The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment sets a minimum annual remuneration of €40,904 for a restricted set of strategically important occupations requiring a relevant degree or higher, €36,848 where the qualification was received within the twelve months before applying, and €68,911 for all other eligible occupations. The government has published a roadmap of gradual increases, so check the current figure at enterprise.gov.ie before relying on it.

Which band does my role fall into?

It is decided by whether your occupation sits on the restricted list of strategically important occupations, not by your seniority or how well you interview. Many pharmaceutical and life science roles do sit on it. Checking which band applies to your target role takes about ten minutes and changes what you should be negotiating for.

Is Irish pharma stronger in manufacturing or in clinical development?

Manufacturing, by a wide margin. Cork and the harbour area hold a dense concentration of active ingredient and biologics plants, and Dublin, Limerick, Waterford, Sligo and Westport each anchor significant operations. The deepest demand is in quality, manufacturing science and technology, validation, supply chain and production-side regulatory work. Clinical development is a thinner market there than the country's pharma reputation suggests.

What is the biggest practical obstacle to moving to Ireland for a job?

Housing. Rental supply in Dublin and Cork is tight and expensive relative to salary, and it is the most common reason a candidate accepts an offer and then does not move, or moves and leaves within two years. Treat relocation support as part of the negotiation rather than as something to sort out afterwards; the larger employers have real answers and usually do not volunteer them.

Do I need to change my CV for the Irish market?

If you are coming from Germany, Austria or Switzerland, yes. Ireland follows the British convention: two pages, no photograph, no date of birth, no marital status, and achievement-led phrasing rather than the plain factual register that works in the German-speaking market. A CV that reads as credible in Basel usually reads as flat in Cork.

How long is an Irish notice period?

Statutory minimum notice runs on a sliding scale by length of service, starting at one week, but most professional contracts specify considerably more, commonly one to three months. Your contract rather than the statute will govern your case.
